What actually separates them
The categories describe how much metal holds the glass. Framed doors run aluminum around every edge and use thinner glass. Semi-frameless keeps metal on some edges — usually the fixed panel — and leaves the door edges bare. Frameless uses thick glass with hinges and clamps only.
- Framed: 1/4 in. glass, full perimeter metal, lowest cost, best water containment on low curbs.
- Semi-frameless: mixed glass thickness, partial metal, middle cost, fewer visible frames.
- Frameless: 3/8 or 1/2 in. glass, hinges and clamps only, highest cost, most open look.
Water control
Framed systems are genuinely better at keeping water in, because the frame is a channel. Frameless enclosures rely on the door being hung correctly, sweeps being in the right places, and the shower head not aiming at the gap.
This is why a frameless door in a curbless or low-curb shower needs its layout thought through, not just its glass ordered.
Cleaning and maintenance
Frameless wins on cleaning: there is almost nothing to trap soap. Framed systems have a bottom rail or track that collects residue, though top-hung sliders remove the worst of it.
In hard water, all three types spot. What differs is how easy it is to wipe.
When framed is the better decision
Framed is not the budget compromise it is often described as. In a narrow alcove that needs a bypass slider, on a low curb, or in a rental where parts need to be replaceable, a framed system is the more sensible specification.
The short version
Choose frameless for large, square, well-curbed openings where the look matters most. Choose framed for narrow alcoves, low curbs, and high-turnover properties. Semi-frameless splits the difference.
